Restorative Dentistry

Restorative dentistry is how we replace the missing or damaged teeth. The procedures include filling, root canal, tooth extraction, bone graft with implant, crown, bridge, and dentures — steps to keep your mouth healthy and functional. At Apollo Dental, Dr. Ishita, the most trusted dentist in the Ballantyne Charlotte area, and her team offers a variety of quality care dental restorations.

Tooth decay destroys part of the tooth. A cavity is left behind after tooth decay. The dentists clean away the decay inside the cavity which still contains the bacteria to prevent the spread and damage to the tooth. Dental filling is used to restore the function, integrity and morphology of missing tooth structure. There are different types of fillings.

  • Amalgam (Silver colored) – It is made of mercury, silver, tin, copper and other materials
  • Composite fillings (tooth colored) – they are made from powdered glass quartz, silica or other ceramic particles added to a resin base. The shade can be matched to your teeth.
  • Gold inlays and onlays (gold colored) — An inlay is small and placed on the biting surface of the tooth. An onlay can cover a larger area of the tooth. Gold is a long-lasting, hard wearing filling material and lasts for years.
  • Porcelain inlays (tooth colored) — it is an expensive filling and usually requires two dental appointments. It can be matched to your tooth color.

Laser cavity detection helps us to illuminate the smallest of cavities and areas of decay before they become visible to the naked eye. It allows us to fill cavities while they are small and helps preserve healthy tooth structure. If you have amalgam fillings now, we can even replace them with composite ones. To learn more, call us at Apollo Dental and schedule a dental examination.

After regular teeth cleanings, fillings are the second most common dental treatment. We can fill cavities and stop decay with durable tooth colored resin that blends in seamlessly with your natural teeth. The tooth colored fillings can be customized to match your tooth shade. Please discuss with our Apollo Dental team to find the best solution for you.

Bonding is a procedure where a tooth colored resin is applied and hardened with a special light which bonds the material to the tooth to improve the person’s smile. It can repair teeth that are chipped and stained, crooked and have minor gaps. Bonding is affordable, durable, and long-lasting and is an excellent alternative to dental veneers and crowns. Dr. Ishita Seth can meet with you, examine your teeth, and discuss how a bonding procedure can help improve your smile.

Root Canal

A root canal is used to repair and save a badly infected or decayed tooth. During the root canal treatment (RCT), we remove the pulp inside the tooth, clean, disinfect and shape the root canals, and places a filling to seal the space.

Dental Extraction

Severe tooth decay can infect the surrounding tooth and abscess may form. Our dentist will try her best to save the natural tooth, but if the abscess worsens, to prevent sepsis, she would need to do a tooth extraction. It is urgent and important otherwise it can cause sepsis, shock and even death.

Bone Grafting

We can perform dental bone graft procedures to restore your bone following tooth loss, gum disease and trauma. It is used to maintain facial structure after tooth extraction. The jaw and other facial bone support the face and appearance. An implant placement requires the jawbone to be as close to its original size and shape as possible. At Apollo Dental, we use an allograft bone (autograft requires a second surgical site and there may not be enough available bone for the procedure).

A crown is a cap that is cemented over the tooth to restore the tooth to its normal shape, size and function. It is used to restore an infected, damaged or fallen out tooth. There are different types of dental crowns.

  • Ceramic – It is made of porcelain-based materials. It blends with the natural tooth color and are commonly used for the front tooth. It is less durable as compared to below options (especially if you grind your teeth at night).
  • Porcelain fused to metal – It is connected to a metal, provides a stronger bond and is extremely durable.
  • Gold Alloys – It is a mix of gold, copper and other metals. They are highly resistant to wear and gentle on opposing teeth.
  • Base metal alloys – They are highly resistant to corrosion and makes a strong crown.

At Apollo Dental, Dr Ishita Seth can discuss different options with you and help you make the right decision for your mouth.

Inlays and Onlays

Inlays and onlays are used to supplement the natural tooth and fill in areas that have been decayed or damaged. Inlays repair damage contained within the cusp (outer ridge) of the tooth, while onlays are slightly larger and repair damage that extends beyond the cusp. Inlays and onlays require minimal removal of healthy tooth structure, so they are a great option for patients who need a restoration but don’t quite require a full crown. To compare we show all three together –

Crown and bridge

Crowns and bridges are two of the most effective ways to repair decayed and damaged teeth, and they are always custom-made to ensure they look completely natural. A bridge uses two crowns that fit over the anchoring teeth, called abutments on either side of the gap and a false tooth or teeth in between. It helps to restore its strength and appearance at the same time, and a bridge can replace up to 4 missing teeth in a row. These false teeth are called pontics and can be made from porcelain, gold, alloys or a combination. The dental bridges need to be supported by natural teeth or implants.

Implant and Dentures

Dentures are removable appliances that can replace the missing teeth and help restore the smile. There are two types – partial (when some natural teeth remain) and complete (when all the teeth are missing). With the advancement of technology, more options including implant supported dentures are available now.

Implant supported dentures are used in patients who do not have teeth in the jaw, but enough bone to support implants. They help preserve the remaining jawbone and maintain the facial structure. They are strong, stable and attached securely to the jaw. It is a long-lasting solution to help restore normal chewing capacity. There are various subtypes available. Please consult Dr. Ishita Seth to discuss what is your best option.
